As a husband, father, and Congressman, Don Cazayoux understands the values of faith, family and public service. Don grew up in New Roads, Louisiana where he and his family continue to live. Don has been married to Cherie for 22 years and together they have three children, Michael, 18, Chavanne, 16, and Katie, 12. Don's family still lives in New Roads while he commutes to Washington , DC to serve in Congress. He comes home every weekend to spend time with them and travel the district meeting constituents.
Don earned a BS and an MA from Louisiana State University and a JD from Georgetown Law School . After law school, Don started his career with Chaffe, McCall, Philips, Toler, and Sarpy in Baton Rouge . He then went on to serve as a prosecutor in Pointe Coupee Parish. As a prosecutor, Don never lost a jury trial. He put hundreds of criminals behind bars and fought to crack down on sexual predators who put our community at risk. Don continues to practice law in New Roads.
Don was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1999 and served as a state representative until May 2008 when he was elected to Congress. In the legislature, Don was known as a consensus builder and a leader. As a legislator, he helped pass historic investments in Louisiana 's schools and roads. Don also continued his efforts to crack down on sexual predators by passing laws to give law enforcement the tools they need to keep our community safe. Don was also a leader on ethics disclosure laws for elected officials. He was successful in passing strong ethics laws regarding lobbying the executive branch as well as banning legislators from raising money during the legislative session. Don believes improved infrastructure, better schools and stronger ethics laws are the key to luring new jobs to the state and the region.
In May, 2008, Don was elected to the United States Congress from the 6th District. As a proud member of the Blue Dog Coalition, Don is working to find commonsense, bipartisan solutions to the problems our country faces. Don is working to solve our energy crisis by supporting comprehensive energy legislation that includes increased domestic drilling as well as investment in alternative energy sources. He is also focused on lowering taxes on middle class families, increasing access to quality, affordable healthcare, and honoring our veterans by ensuring they receive the healthcare and benefits they so bravely earned. |
